Carefully Decorating Your Home Can Make Your Holidays Safer

Selecting Your Holiday Tree:
  • If you are going to purchase a “real” tree this year, pick a tree that has green fresh needles. Test them to make sure they don’t easily fall off when you touch them.

Picking the Right Spot:

  • Select an area of your home that does not block any doorways or exits.
  • Keep the tree at least 3 to 4 feet away from your fireplace, heating vents or any other heat sources including candles.
  • To add to your new tree’s lifespan, cut the base of the trunk of the tree again before you place it into the tree stand.
  • Check the tree stand regularly and add water as necessary.
Decorating the Tree:
  • Check the wiring on the light string for any damage or loose bulbs even if you purchased them new.
  • Test the light string by plugging it into an electrical socket before you start adding it to the tree to carefully inspect it.
  • If you find any damage, return the light set, or throw them away. Do not take any chances.
  • Do not use candles on your tree for decorating.
  • Make sure to always turn off your tree lights before going to bed or before you leave the house.

After the Holidays:

  • Once the holidays are over, make sure you dispose of your tree and any damaged lights and decorations, including wreaths. It is very dangerous to leave the tree (or wreath) in your basement, garage or shed as the dried branches are very combustible.
  • Also make sure to take down your outdoor lights and decorations as well.
