Digital Proof of Auto Insurance is Coming to Minnesota! StPolice Office Holding Cell Phonearting July 1, 2015, drivers in Minnesota will be able to show their proof of insurance from their cell phone or computer to an officer. The bill past both the House and Senate this week allowing digital proof of their insurance.

Similar laws already exist on 37 other states.

The bill has language the specifies that law enforcement is only allowed to view the proof of insurance, and not allowed to search or view anything else on the device, a concern that was brought up by those originally opposing the bill.

The bill also specifies that law enforcement will not be liable if the phone is dropped or damaged while viewing the proof of insurance.

Minnesota drivers will be able to download and use one of the many apps that are offered by the various insurance agencies, or simply snap a picture with their camera of the paper version of the card for those that may be more technically challenged, or don’t care to have the app on their device.

The bill goes into effect on July 1, 2015
