Preparing for the Blast of Winter

Here in Minnesota, we know the drill. Four or five months of bundling up, heavy cloths, warming up the car, seeing your breath as you run to catch the paper. Old Man Winter is here, are you prepared?

Prepare your home for a winter storm:

  • Weather-strip doors and windows and make sure the walls and attic are insulated. When is the last time you looked at your insulation?
  • Wrap your water pipes in the crawl space and basement with insulation to keep the heat in.
  • Wrap an insulated blanket around your hot water heater.
  • Move furniture away from heat vents.
  • During extreme cold, you can open doors to the cabinets in the bathroom and kitchen to help the warm air circulate around your pipes.
  • If you have a fireplace keep the flue closed when you are not using it.
Clean out your gutters and drain all the water hoses outside your home.
  • Shut off outside water valves.
  • If you have faucets that connect to unheated spaces, keep a slow trickle of water flowing through them.
  • Check your roof for any leaks.
  • Remove tree branches and leaves that can weigh down with the ice and snow.
